Thursday 10 September 2020

  • Platform is excited to announce that it has had three successful applications to the NZSL Community Grants for the 2020/21 financial year! These grants help community-led initiatives that promote and maintain NZSL. The following programs have been funded:

    Finding your place in Aotearoa via Te Tiriti o Waitangi

    • Providing a series of workshops to Maori Deaf in partnership with Tu Tangata Turi, the first focusing on Tu Tanagata and then the rest provided across New Zealand

    Creating Standards for using interpreters in mental health situations

    • Develop guidelines, supervision processes and deliver workshops for NZSL interpreters in mental health settings and addiction settings. Scope training for interpreting work during comprehensive mental health assessments and treatment.

    Changing Minds in the deaf Community

    • Develop Rākau Roroa sessions – face to face, small group two-day sessions with Deaf people who have a lived experience of mental distress and recovery, to use the experience to create change in the community by empowering them with knowledge.

  • The first meeting of the Deaf MH&A Advisory group is Tuesday 1st of September. Jo is heading to Christchurch this week to start meeting with Deaf people to hear how they access support and information around Mental health, addiction and Wellbeing. The minutes of the meeting are here


Monday 3 August 2020

  • We are close to finalising the advisory group who will meet for the first time in September.  The purpose of the group is to ensure Deaf leadership and mental health, addiction and wellbeing sector expertise is central to the delivery of this work programme. 

    Jo is also planning to travel around NZ and meet with Deaf community leaders to hear from Deaf people about:

    1. How Deaf people access mental health, addiction and wellbeing support.
    2. What health promotion, literacy and awareness information is currently accessible for the Deaf community.
    3. The current MH&A workforce or staff who can confidently work with the Deaf community.
